Annamalai, also known as Annamalai Kuppusami in Tamil, is an Indian politician and the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. Previously, he served as a police officer. On July 8, 2021, he was appointed as the State President of the Tamil Nadu BJP by the National President Jagat Prakash Nadda.

He completed his schooling in Karur and Namakkal districts and grew up in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sa Ka College of Technology. Following this, Annamalai pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a specialization in Marketing and Strategy from the Indian Institute of Management in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Later, he joined the Indian Police Service after passing the UPSC exams in 2011.

He joined the Indian Police Service in 2011. In September 2013, He started their career as an Assistant Police Superintendent in the Karkala subdivision of Udupi district. Later, on January 1, 2015, he were promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police in the same area and served until August 2016. He was then transferred to Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka and served as a Deputy Superintendent of Police until October 2018. In 2018, He was appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police for South Bangalore and served until October 2018.

Annamalai cleared the civil service examination and joined the Indian Police Service in the Karnataka cadre in 2011. He began his career as an IPS Officer in Karnataka.

He served as the Assistant Superintendent of Police from September 2013 to December 2014 in the Karkala subdivision, Udupi District of Karnataka. Later, he became the Superintendent of Police of Udupi District from January 2015 to August 2016. Subsequently, Annamalai was posted in the Chikkamangaluru district of Karnataka from August 2016 to October 2018 as Superintendent of Police. His final assignment as an IPS officer was from October 2018 to June 2019, when he served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Bengaluru South in Karnataka.

Annamalai earned the nickname “Singham” of Karnataka for his leadership. He led four police stations to achieve ISO 9001:2008 certification. During his tenure as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Karkala, he actively engaged with the community by visiting educational institutions and delivering lectures.

In 2019, Annamalai resigned from the Indian Police Service to enter politics.

Politics:–

Annamalai, who had no prior political background, was inspired by the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he decided to join politics after meeting him and BJP President Amit Shah a year after leaving the police force. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national headquarters in the presence of BJP general secretary Muralidhar Rao and the party’s Tamil Nadu chief L. Murugan. He was appointed as the state vice president for BJP in August 2020.

In 2019, He resigned from their police job. Later, He returned to their native state Tamil Nadu. He was interested in organic farming and started working in related fields. They found inspiration from the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and became members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, Annamalai contested from the Aravakurichi constituency. Despite slim chances of victory, he was determined to contest from his hometown constituency. Although he lost the elections, securing 68,553 votes, he was later appointed as the Tamil Nadu BJP President by National President J. P. Nadda on July 8, 2021, becoming the youngest ever state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In July 2023, Annamalai launched the “En Mann En Makkal” Campaign, flagged off by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In March 2023, Annamalai faced legal trouble when he was booked by the Tamil Nadu Police under the Indian Penal Code for promoting disharmony between different groups based on religion, race, and language. This came after a tweet linking the ruling DMK to rumors about abuse of north Indian migrant workers in Tamil Nadu, which were later found to be misleading.
